Acne… or something else?

With her 30th birthday so close she could smell it, a patient recently came in determined to finally put an end to her Acne problem. After fighting a losing battle against her acne everyday for the past 17-years, by the time she came to us she had self-admittedly “tried everything” to no avail.   Inspection of her skin revealed the immediate reason why no acne treatment had cleared her skin before: the problem wasn’t acne! The smattering of acne combined with flushed cheeks told me the real cause behind her skin dissatisfaction– Rosacea.    It is very easy to be unaware of Rosacea, and blame your skin’s redness and bumps on...

Connect the dots: the REAL attribute that makes you look old

Think fast: When you think of signs of physical aging, what is the first thing that comes to mind?   If this was Family Feud, the person who slammed the buzzer quickest and blurted out “wrinkles” would certainly be the winner. “Gray hair” might be next on the list, followed by perhaps “glasses”, and then maybe “balding”, with possibly a “cane” or “dentures” coming in last.   What was your first mental association with aging?   Because of society’s deeply ingrained notion of what “old age” looks like– a combination of wrinkles, glasses, and gray hair– it comes as a surprise to learn that a recent study done...

Can you identify which face belongs to which age; 25, 35, 45, 55, and 65 years old?     My patients often tell me that their friends make fun of them for being so diligent about sun-protection, and to those that don’t know– I suppose applying SPF 50 all winter long can seem silly. However, to brilliantly demonstrate the subversive effects that sun damage has on our skin, day-in and day-out, Julie Kenner, M.D., PhD recently constructed a very...

New beauty trend: “Mommy & me” plastic surgery?

A mother/daughter relationship is rich in it’s complexities, and as the daughter matures and grows-up the pendulum usually swings from care-giver & child, to equals. Instead of relying on Mom for food and shelter, both come to rely upon each other for things such as advice giving, secret sharing, and mini-counseling sessions. Mothers and daughters make for great friendships because the comfort level each party has with the other is extremely high; both already know each other’s history, family circumstances, habits, and fears, and often they know each other so well that a multitude of things can be communicated merely from a look. These days,...

The top 5 *CONTROLLABLE* factors that cause unhealthy skin

Genetics aside, there are many aspects that you do have control over when it comes to the appearance of your skin. The following list details daily changes you can make to your lifestyle to help ensure the clearest, youngest, healthiest looking skin possible, and yes– you can do them all! 1. Sun Damage The TOP skin offender, the sun is a major contributor to unhealthy skin. “Repeated sun exposure depletes collagen and elastin from within [the skin], making the skin less elastic, and thinner, which leads to premature wrinkles,” says Dr. Callahan, a Florida based dermatologist. The sun is a known contributor of dark-colored spots and leathery, wrinkled...
