The very beginning of July is usually geared up towards celebrating the 4th of July, with the expected fireworks, barbecues, and sales.
But, the day before we celebrate our nation’s independence is focused on a different kind of appreciation: July 3rd is “National Compliment Your Mirror Day,” where the focus is not on the country, but on your face.
Although the origins of “National Compliment Your Mirror” Day are murky, the sentiment is a very important one for all Americans whom are notorious for being extremely image-conscious and insecure. On this day, it is encouraged to look at your reflection, and put aside your insecurities. Regardless of the spots, wrinkles, veins, hairs or whatever that usually drives you crazy, the face reflecting back to you from the mirror is still You, and today is the day to put aside your deepest self-criticisms and appreciate the face staring back at you.
Unlike other holidays, Hallmark has not yet caught on to “National Compliment Your Mirror” Day, so no presents, cards, or flowers need to be purchased. You don’t have to decorate a tree, light candles, or give out candy. To properly celebrate this special day is simple, and free: stand in front of a mirror, close your eyes and think about some aspect of yourself that you love. Smile. Open your eyes, and appreciate the you staring back.
On the heels of recent Hollywood releases such as “Snow White and the Huntsman”, and “Mirror Mirror”, it seems pop-culture is focusing more than ever on the idea of loving what you see in the mirror. (There has never been a greater person-mirror love story than that of the evil queen and her magic mirror in the classic Snow White tale.)
So go ahead, stand in front of your mirror, take a deep breath, and say something nice to your face staring back at you.
July 3rd is also Eat Beans Day. Coincidence?
