SkinPen is a busy person’s answer for beautiful results with virtually no downtime. This fast comfortable procedure will improve the appearance of your skin as early as one week after treatment.
What is a SkinPen?
A SkinPen (Micro-Needling) Device is a medical-grade, state-of-the art tool that uses tiny stainless steel needles to create micro injuries to the skin. This stimulates your skin’s natural ability to repair itself and produce new collagen and elastin for healthier, younger appearing skin. Sometimes referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT).
What problems can it effectively treat?
The SkinPen is particularly effective for rejuvenating skin. As new healthy collagen is formed you will see smoother, brighter and tighter skin. SkinPen works well for fine lines and wrinkles. acne and surgical scars, sun damage, pore size, skin laxity, lip lines and crepey under eye skin.
How does a SkinPen treatment compare to Fraxel treatments?
The concept is the same; create micro injuries to the skin to stimulate the growth of new collagen. A laser does this with heat energy where the SkinPen uses mechanical energy (Micro-Needles). Because there is no heat injury to the skin with a SkinPen treatment there is much less downtime (1-2 days vs. up to a week with laser treatments) and comparable results can be accomplished with less pain and less cost.
Will it hurt?
A numbing cream is placed on the face for 30-minutes before treatment. Most patients report virtually no pain, just a vibrating sensation. Some note a mild stinging sensation that is easily tolerated. When asked most report either no discomfort or a 1-2/10 level of discomfort. Patients say that they would definitely do it again.
Can all skin types use the SkinPen?
Yes, the SkinPen is safe for all skin types. Because no heat is used, there is little risk of post inflammatory inflammation which can occur in darker skin types after a laser treatment.

How long does the procedure take?

After treatment, Rescue Calming Complex will be placed on your face to soothe the skin. A specific skin care regimen will be recommended to optimize your results. You will be sent home with a 24-hour supply of Rescue Calming Complex.
What will I look like after the treatment? What is the recovery time?
Total healing time depends on each individual patient. It is best to not plan any important events 1-2 days after the procedure. Most people are able to return to work the day after treatment. Most patients should expect the following:
Day 1: (Day of Treatment). Mild to moderate redness, similar to a sunburn. Possible mild swelling, bruising and slight pin point bleeding. Your skin may feel tight and warm.
Day 2: Fading but some persistent redness easily covered with makeup. You may note skin dryness and slight flaking.
Day 3: Most redness, any bruising and swelling should be nearly gone.
Many patients completely recover within 24 hours. If you had your neck treated, it may take longer to heal. If you have a darker skin type, pigmented areas may darken before they grow lighter.
How do I take care of my skin after my treatment? When can I wear makeup?
For the first 18-24 hours after treatment, you should use only warm water and Rescue Calming Complex on the treated areas. You will be sent home with a 24 hour supply of Rescue. You may wear makeup the morning after your treatment.
On the day following your treatment, you may begin a skin cleanser, moisturizer and Zinc Oxide sunscreen. Choose fragrance free products made for sensitive or post procedure skin. Cetaphil (over the counter) and many others carry fragrance free product designed for sensitive skin. You may begin your regular skin care regimen 3-4 days after your SkinPen treatment but should wait 1 week before you begin any Retinol products.
Avoid sweaty exercise and sun exposure for 3 days after treatment.
Avoid exfoliating agents for 2 weeks.
How do I get the best results from my SkinPen treatment?
Best results are a 2-step process. Your goal is to increase the amount of collagen in you skin to minimize fine lines and wrinkles and to improve skin tone, texture and laxity. Your SkinPen treatment triggered a healing response in your skin that will build more collagen. After your SkinPen treatment, continued daily skin care with products that contain skin repair/age defense ingredients will help maintain your results. We can recommend a simple daily plan of professional strength, effective products to keep your skin looking its best.
When will I see results? How many treatments will I need?
Most see brighter healthier skin within a few days following their treatment. If you are just wanting to brighten an already healthy complexion, you may need only 1 treatment but depending on the health of your skin and the amount of pre-existing damage, you may need 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart to get the level of improvement you desire. You will continue to see improvement in your skin for 3-6 months after treatment as new collagen grows giving your skin a more youthful healthy appearance. To maintain your results, get a SkinPen treatment every 4-6 months once you have reached your desired result.
How long will my results last?
Skin is a living growing tissue. No skin enhancement including micro-needling is permanent. Micro-needling is not an aggressive treatment but is gentler and designed for incremental results. Once you reach your desired results, normal aging will continue. The new collagen should last for a long time unless the skin is further damaged by sun exposure, smoking or external factors. To maintain your results, good skin care is recommended.
Are there any reasons that I should not get a SkinPen treatment?
You should not get a SkinPen treatment if the area to be treated has:
- Active cancer, open wounds or active bacterial, fungal or viral (cold sores, warts) skin infections.
- You have use retinoids (Retinol, Retin-A) or autoimmune (helminthic) therapy within 24 hours.
